Black Night-Cold Light Bioluminescent Kayak Tour at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge - Saturday

Bioluminescence - every movement is illuminated

Bioluminescence - every movement is illuminated

During the warm summer months the waters in the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon come alive with bioluminescence. Certain marine life have developed the ability to use chemicals within their bodies to produce light, that is bioluminescence.

This must see phenomenon is typically found in the deep in the ocean, where sunlight can no longer penetrate. However, it can be found on the Black Night/Cold Light Bioluminescent Kayak Tour in sunny central Florida.

From the swirl of your paddle or the trail of a speeding school of mullet (which look like hundreds of blue-green underwater bottle rockets), to the ghostly glow of a slow moving manatee or sting ray, every movement is illuminated.

  1. Arrive at scheduled departure time, usually 1 hour before dark
  2. Check-in & complete waivers
  3. Gear up, PFD, whistle, light and glowstick
  4. Introductions, safety meeting, brief paddling instruction and kayak assignments
  5. Launch kayaks and enjoy an incredible experience on the water for about 2 hours
  6. Arrive back at launch, turn in gear and farewells

This tour takes place in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, located on the east coast of Florida in Brevard County - east of Titusville and about 50 miles east of Orlando. The specific location and directions will be provided on your E-Ticket, including GPS coordinates.
